FortiGate Firewall License Renewal (UTP) is what keeps your protection live. Once a UTP licence lapses, IPS, antivirus, web filtering and application control stop updating and the firewall is left with basic packet filtering only. Why is FortiGate Firewall License Renewal important?

Renewing Fortinet Unified Threat Protection (UTP) keeps the security services on your firewall supplied with current signatures and updated engines. Without it:

  1. Comprehensive protection — UTP combines antivirus, content filtering, email and web filtering, anti-spam, IPS and application control in one device. Renewing it keeps that protection current instead of frozen at the expiry date.
  2. Simplified management — all security services sit on one firewall, monitored through a single pane of glass, rather than through separate appliances or subscriptions.
  3. Antivirus and anti-malware — UTP detects and stops viruses, trojans, worms and spyware using signature databases plus heuristic analysis for new malware.
  4. Firewall and intrusion prevention — traffic is scanned in both directions for malware, phishing and intrusion attempts, and the firewall can stop an infected device from spreading to other networks.
  5. FortiCare Premium included — firmware updates and support come with the UTP bundle, so the firewall stays patched as well as protected.

In short: without a live licence, the hardware still routes traffic, but it no longer inspects it properly.

The exact SKU name and price depend on the model and term; both are confirmed in your quote. One, three and five-year terms are usually available. Hardware maintenance is not included in the licence price — ask us for a separate quote if you want a replacement unit or on-site support.

How the renewal works

  1. Send us the firewall model and serial number, or a screenshot of Dashboard → Status in the FortiGate GUI.
  2. We come back with the licence SKU, term and price by email.
  3. Once payment is settled, we register the renewal against your serial number.
  4. We confirm the licence is active on the firewall, and help apply it if the device is not already online.

UTP or FortiCare — which do you need?

FortiCare covers support, firmware updates and hardware RMA. UTP includes FortiCare Premium plus the security subscriptions — IPS, antivirus, application control, web and DNS filtering and anti-spam. Most Hong Kong SMEs need UTP, because a firewall without security subscriptions is just a router with rules. If you only need support and firmware updates, FortiCare on its own may be enough.

Fortinet also sells Enterprise Protection bundles that add inline sandboxing, CASB, DLP and OT security on top of UTP — relevant if you handle sensitive customer data or industrial equipment.

Renewal FAQ

Can I renew an expired FortiGate licence?

Yes. Renewing reactivates signature updates — there is no need to buy new hardware because the licence lapsed. The sooner it is renewed, the shorter the gap where the firewall was not inspecting traffic properly.

My firewall is an older E-series model — can it still be renewed?

In many cases, yes, while Fortinet still lists the model. Send us the model and serial number and we will confirm whether a renewal SKU is available. If it is not, we will say so and quote a G-series replacement instead.

Do I need to send you the firewall?

No. Renewal is registered against the serial number; nothing physical changes.

Can I renew for longer than one year?

Yes — 1, 3 and 5-year terms are usually available. Longer terms lock in the price and avoid renewing again next year.
