Sophos XGS 88: Desktop Firewall for Hong Kong SMEs

Sophos XGS next-generation firewall

If you run a small office in Hong Kong — an accounting practice, a design studio, a trading company with a dozen staff — your firewall has to do a great deal with very little. The Sophos XGS 88 is built for exactly that: a fanless desktop appliance that delivers next-generation firewall protection, fast connectivity and Sophos’ distinctive Synchronized Security, with no rack, no server room and no specialist engineer on site.

It is the entry point to the Sophos XGS series, and in our experience it is the right first firewall for most Hong Kong small businesses moving up from a consumer router or an ageing desktop firewall.

Sophos XGS 88 specifications at a glance

  • 9.9 Gbps firewall throughput
  • 2 Gbps IPS / NGFW throughput — with deep inspection switched on
  • 6 Gbps IPsec VPN throughput
  • 1.6 million concurrent connections
  • 4 × 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports
  • Fanless desktop form factor — silent, and cheap to run

Those figures are Sophos’ published datasheet values, measured in a lab. Real-world throughput depends on how many security services you enable, but for a 20–50 person office on a business broadband line the XGS 88 has substantial headroom — including room for a failover WAN or a guest network on its own port.

What you actually get: the security services

The hardware is only half the product. The protection comes from the subscriptions that run on it:

  • Intrusion prevention (IPS) — inspects traffic for known exploit patterns and blocks them before they reach a server or workstation.
  • Antivirus and anti-malware — scans downloads, email attachments and web traffic at the gateway, so an infected file never lands on an endpoint.
  • Web filtering and application control — category-based blocking plus rules for specific apps, useful for keeping social media or personal cloud storage off office hours traffic.
  • VPN for remote work — IPsec site-to-site for a second office, and SSL VPN for staff working from home.
  • Reporting and alerting — a cloud console shows what was blocked and which device was the source.

Without a subscription you get routing, firewall rules and VPN only. The security services are what turn the box into a next-generation firewall, so budget for a protection bundle as part of the project rather than treating it as an optional extra.

Synchronized Security: firewall and endpoints that talk to each other

This is Sophos’ real differentiator, and the reason many of our clients choose XGS over a cheaper box. With Security Heartbeat enabled, the firewall and Sophos endpoint protection share health status in real time. When an endpoint reports that it is compromised, the firewall can automatically restrict that machine’s network access until it is cleaned — the infection is contained in seconds instead of spreading across the office.

It only works if both ends are Sophos, so it is most valuable for businesses standardising on Sophos Intercept X. If your endpoints run a different product, the XGS 88 still works well, but you lose that automatic isolation.

Sophos XGS 88 vs FortiGate 50G and 60F

The obvious alternative in this price band is the FortiGate 50G, the current entry-level model in Fortinet’s G-series. On paper:

  • XGS 88 — 9.9 Gbps firewall, 2 Gbps IPS/NGFW, 1.6M concurrent connections, 4 × 2.5GE ports.
  • FortiGate 50G — 5 Gbps firewall, 1.1 Gbps threat protection, 720,000 concurrent sessions, fanless 8.9W design.

The XGS 88 has the higher headline throughput and more multi-gigabit ports; the FortiGate 50G is smaller, draws less power and is typically cheaper to buy and license. The FortiGate 60F is the model most Hong Kong offices are replacing today, and the 50G is Fortinet’s intended successor for that role.

In practice the decision usually comes down to ecosystem rather than a datasheet: if your IT team already runs FortiGate with FortiCare and FortiAnalyzer, stay with Fortinet and take the 50G. If your endpoints are protected by Sophos, or you want Synchronized Security and a single cloud console across firewall and endpoints, the XGS 88 is the more coherent choice.

Where the XGS 88 fits in a Hong Kong small office

  • Single-site offices up to around 50 users — professional firms, agencies, trading and logistics companies.
  • Retail and clinic environments — separate guest Wi-Fi from the POS and back-office network on dedicated ports.
  • Branch offices — IPsec VPN back to head office in Hong Kong or overseas.
  • Offices on 2.5G broadband or dual WAN — the 2.5GE ports and throughput headroom avoid the firewall becoming the bottleneck.

What it is not is a replacement for a data-centre firewall. If you run servers for public-facing web applications, or you are consolidating several sites, look at the larger models in the XGS range rather than stretching the 88.

Deployment and support

We supply the XGS 88 configured for your network — WAN and VPN settings, firewall rules, web filtering policy, guest network and alerting — and we can monitor and patch it as part of our managed IT service. Licensing is a subscription: choose the protection bundle and term that fit your risk profile, and renew before expiry, because letting the subscription lapse silently drops you back to basic firewall features.

Is the Sophos XGS 88 right for your office?

If you are unsure between the XGS 88, the larger XGS 108, or a FortiGate model, the honest answer is that it depends on your user count, your broadband and which endpoint protection you already run. A short call is usually enough to settle it.
